Etymologie
Pachys (= dick); gaster (= Bauch), Anspielung nicht erklärt, bezieht sich vielleicht auf den dicken, aufblasbaren Bauch. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Zirkumglobal in tropischen und warm-gemäßigten Meeren (einschließlich Mittelmeer, Japanisches Meer).

Gefahren für diese Art: Sphoeroides pachygaster wird als Beifang in der Langleinen- und Reusenfischerei auf Pandalid-Garnelen gefangen, und in Teilen ihres Verbreitungsgebiets verzehrt.
Sphoeroides pachygaster scheint besonders anfällig für Beifangsterblichkeit zu sein. In einer durchgeführten Studie über Sphoeroides pachygaster als Beifang auf kommerziellen Fischereifahrzeugen wurden 15 Individuen entnommen und nach den üblichen Verfahren der Branche an Deck gebracht. Nach dem Abladen an Deck starben 40 % der Exemplare innerhalb der ersten Stunde und 87 % innerhalb der sechsten Stunde. Die höchste Überlebensrate wiesen zwei ausgewachsene Exemplare auf: ein Männchen (2,2 kg) und ein Weibchen (1,2 kg), die nach neun bzw. 15 Stunden starben.
