Benannt nach der Typuslokalität, dem Tota-See in Kolumbien.

Status: Stand 18.2.2022: CR Critically Endangered (vom Aussterben bedroht)
Gefahren für diese Art: Es wird vermutet, dass die Einführung exotischer Arten der Hauptgrund für das Aussterben dieser Art ist, insbesondere Eremophilus mutisii, ein naher Verwandter mit ähnlicher Morphologie, der an benthische Bedingungen angepasst ist und daher höchstwahrscheinlich dieselbe ökologische Nische teilt (Mojica et al. 2012). Andere eingeführte Taxa, von denen angenommen wird, dass sie mit dieser Art konkurrieren, sind Grundulus bogotensis, Carassius auratus und Oncorhynchus mykiss (Mojica et al. 2012). Hinzu kommt die Verschmutzung durch Agrochemikalien aus der nahegelegenen Landwirtschaft, die zu einer kontinuierlichen Verschlechterung der Qualität des Lebensraums führt.
