Etymologie
Rabidus (= verrückt), in Anlehnung an den von Afroamerikanern im Virginia des 19. Jahrhunderts für Noturus insignis verwendeten Ausdruck "Mad-Tom"; die Bedeutung des Ausdrucks könnte sich auf die Wut beziehen, die man empfindet, wenn man von einem ihrer giftigen Stacheln gestochen wird, oder (wie von Ono et al., 1983, Vanishing Fishes of North America, berichtet, jedoch ohne Quellenangabe) auf ihr scheinbar verrücktes Schwimmverhalten (vermutlich, wenn sie aufgeschreckt wird?)
