Etymologie
Von pareia (= Wange); rhine (= Feile oder Raspel), vermutlich auf "körnige" (oder raspelige) Seiten des Kopfes bezogen. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Phylogenie
Die verwandtschaftliche Zugehörigkeit von Pseudotocinclus ist umstritten. Traditionell wird sie den Hypoptopomatinae zugeordnet. DNA-Untersuchungen (Chiachio et al., 2008; Cramer et al., 2011; Roxo et al., 2012) ergaben aber eine engere Verwandtschaft zu Pareiorhina bzw. eine Schwesterposition zu den Neoplecostominae. Pereira & Reis (2017) konstatieren aber, dass es für solche Zusammenhänge keine morphologische Unterstützung gibt und die formelle die Zuordnung von Pseudotocinclus zu den Neoplecostominae (Roxo et al., 2012) verfrüht sei.
