Epi-, (auf oder über); platys (= weit, breit, flach oder eben), Anspielung nicht erklärt, vermutlich bezogen auf den länglichen Kopf von Epiplatys sexfasciatus und / oder auf die flache Rückenfläche der vorderen Körperhälfte. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
