Etymologie
Benannt nach der Typuslokalität.
Verbreitung
Polypterus senegalus ist weit verbreitet von den Flüssen Gambia und Senegal über den Niger und das Tschadbecken bis zum Nil (Sudd, Weißer Nil und Nebenflüsse, nördlich bis Khartoum), Volta-Becken und mehrere Küstenflüsse von Togo bis Westnigeria. Sie ist auch in den Seen Albert und Turkana [= Rudolf] einschließlich dem Omo River vorhanden. Eine Reliktpopulation ist aus dem Boukou-See im Norden des Tschad bekannt. Sie ist auch in der Katanga-Region im südlichen Kongobecken präsent. Jeweils ein Exemplar wurde im zentralen Kongobecken stromabwärts von Kisangani und im nördlichen Kongobecken vom Kotto-Fluss, einem Nebenfluss des Oubangui-Flusses, gesammelt.
