Benannt nach dem Freund und Kollegen der Autoren, John Richard Paxton (geb. 1938), Australian Museum (Sydney), der Typusexemplare zur Verfügung stellte, als „gutmütige Erinnerung daran, dass man einen Fisch nicht nach seiner Hülle beurteilen kann“ (Paxton glaubte ursprünglich, dass die Exemplare eine unbeschriebene Gattung von Gramma-ähnlichen Serraniden darstellten].
