Etymologie
Patronym nicht identifiziert, aber mit ziemlicher Sicherheit zu Ehren von James Cook (1728-1779), britischer Entdecker, Seefahrer, Kartograph und Marinekapitän, der den Typusfundort (Endeavour River, Queensland, Australien) nach seinem Schiff, der HMS Endeavour, benannte, als er gezwungen war, dort 1770 für Reparaturen zu stranden. Verbreitung
Rotes Meer; Indo-Westpazifik: KwaZulu-Natal (Südafrika), Ostafrika, Persischer Golf, Socotra (Jemen), Seychellen, Madagaskar und westliche Maskarenen (La Réunion, Mauritius), östlich bis zu den Philippinen, nördlich bis zum südlichen Japanischen Meer, südlich bis Queensland (Australien) und Neukaledonien.
