Etymologie
Etymologie nicht erklärt, vielleicht von notos (= südlich), in Bezug auf die Verbreitung von Notolepis coatsi im Südpolarmeer und lepis, ein Suffix, das für Paralepis steht, d.h. ein südlicher Paralepis; der Name könnte mit notos (= Rücken) und lepis (= Schuppen) übersetzt werden, aber die Rückenschuppen werden in der Beschreibung nicht erwähnt und scheinen kein Unterscheidungsmerkmal in dieser Gattung zu sein.
