Etymologie
–Opsis (= Aussehen), Anspielung nicht erklärt, möglicherweise in Bezug auf die oberflächliche Ähnlichkeit von Nandopsis tetracanthus mit der asiatischen Blattfisch-Familie Nandoidae (von Gill in seiner Arbeit erwähnt; jetzt bekannt als Nandidae, Anabantiformes), die vermutlich zu dieser Zeit mit Cichliden als verwandt angesehen war.
