Etymologie
Littoralis (= der Küste), bezogen auf das Vorkommen im Flachwasser über harten und sandigen Böden während des Sommers entlang der Küste von South Carolina (USA).
Verbreitung
Westatlantik: Virginia (USA) und die kontinentale Küste des Golfs von Mexiko. Exemplare entlang der Küste Südamerikas bis zum Rio Grande del Sur, Brasilien, werden der re-validierten Art Menticirrhus gracilis zugeschrieben.
