Etymologie
Abgeleitet von dem wissenschaftlichen Begriff Melanophor, einer dunkelbraunen bis schwarzen Pigmentzelle in einem Tier, selbst eine Kombination aus dem latinisierten griechischen melanos (= schwarz oder dunkel) und -phoros (= tragen), kombiniert mit dem latinisierten griechischen Wort ikhthys (= Fisch). In Anlehnung an die großen dunkelbraunen oder schwarzen Melanophoren, die in konservierten Exemplaren bei Mitgliedern dieser Gattung erhalten sind.
