Etymologie

Punctatus (= punktiert) bezieht sich auf kleine, dunkle Punkte auf dem Körper.

Verbreitung

Nordamerika: St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River Einzugsgebeit) und Missouri-Mississippi Flussgebiete von Süd-Quebec bis Süd-Manitoba und Montana südlich bis zum Golf von Mexiko. Möglicherweise heimisch an den Atlantik- und Golfabhängen vom Susquehanna River bis zum Neuse River und vom Savannah River bis zum Lake Okeechobee, Florida, sowie westlich bis Nordmexiko und Ostneumexiko. In den meisten Teilen der USA eingeführt.
