Die beiden Arten Erethistes hara u. Erethistes pusillus sind am lebenden Fisch kaum zu unterscheiden. Der Unterschied zwischen den Arten besteht lediglich in der Art und Weise, wie die Vorderseite des Brustflosenstachels bestachelt ist. Bei Erethistes pusillus sind die Stacheln auf der Vorderseite des Brustflossenstachels zweispitzig, bei Erethistes hara nur einspitzig
