Etymologie
Etymologie nicht erklärt, vermutlich von kreas (= Leib oder Fleisch) und chanos (= Lücke oder offenes Maul), möglicherweise bezogen auf den zahnlosen (d. h. fleischigen) Oberkiefer ("Oberkiefer ohne Zähne") von Bryconops affinis und Bryconops melanurus (obwohl mindestens eine andere Veröffentlichung besagt, dass ihre Oberkiefer tatsächlich gezähnt sind).
