Etymologie
Cognatus (= verwandt), bezieht auf seine Ähnlichkeit mit dem europäischen Cottus gobio. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Nordamerika: im größten Teil des kanadischen Festlands und in Alaska; Entwässerungsgebiete am Atlantikabhang südlich bis zum Potomac River in Virginia, USA; Einzugsgebiet des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms und der Großen Seen; oberes Einzugsgebiet des Mississippi River in Wisconsin, Minnesota und Iowa, USA; oberes Einzugsgebiet des Columbia River in Kanada und den USA. Auch in Sibirien, Russland.

Status: Stand 4.10.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Es sind keine größeren Bedrohungen bekannt. Obwohl sie in öffentlichen Aquarien verwendet werden, wird nicht davon ausgegangen, dass dies signifikante Auswirkungen hat.
