Etymologie

Etymologie nicht erklärt, vermutlich von cirrus (= Locke oder Ranke), oder cirritus (= filamentös) und Labrus, Typusgattung der Familie, mit zwei möglichen Erklärungen: Bezug auf lange, filamentöse Bauchflossen (vermutlich eines männlichen Cirrhilabrus temminckii, beschrieben, aber nicht benannt bis 1853), von dem Temminck & Schlegel sagten, es sei einzigartig unter den Labriden; oder es bezieht sich auf die Cirrus direkt hinter der Spitze jeder Rücken- und Afterflosse.
