Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Der Lebensraum dieses Fisches, im Chalakudy-Fluss, wird durch Aufstauung, wahllose Entwaldung und anschließende Umwandlung von Waldflächen in landwirtschaftliche Plantagen stark verändert (Raghavan et al. 2008). In anderen Gebieten, in denen der Fisch gefunden wird, sind solche Informationen nicht verfügbar. Diese Bedrohungen könnten jedoch im gesamten Verbreitungsgebiet auftreten. Diese Art ist auch ein Aquarienfisch und das Gefangennehmen von Arten für den Aquariumhandel wird von manchen (allerdings unbewiesener Maßen) als eine Bedrohung angesehen. Thomas et al. (2002), Dahanukaret al. (2004) und Raghavan et al. (2008) haben diese Art als vom Aussterben bedroht betrachtet, sie geben jedoch keine Begründung dafür an.
