Etymologie
Grunniens (= lat. für "grunzen"), was sich auf die trommelartigen Geräusche bezieht, die aus der Schwimmblase geschlechtsreifer Männchen ertönen (daher die gebräuchlichen englischen Namen "Drum" und "Croaker"). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Nord- und Mittelamerika: Einzugsgebiete des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms, der Hudson Bay und des Mississippi von Quebec bis zum nördlichen Manitoba und dem südlichen Saskatchewan in Kanada und südlich des Golfs; Entwässerungsgebiete an der Golfküste von der Mobile Bay in Georgia und Alabama durch den Osten Mexikos bis zum Rio Usumacinta-System in Guatemala.
