Typusfundort: Río Ambyiacu, Peru.
Etymologie

Verbreitung
Ancistrus malacops bewohnt den östlichen Teil Ecuadors, von der Provinz Sucumbíos bis zur Provinz Morona-Santiago, mit Ausnahme des Flusses Santiago, anscheinend ist der Fluss Morona die südliche Grenze der Art.
