Etymologie
Poly (= viele); acanthus (= Dorn), bezieht sich auf sieben erste Rückenflossenstacheln im Vergleich zu sechs unter damals mutmaßlichen Artgenossen in Cheilodipterus. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Indo-Westpazifik: Réunion, Komoren, Madagaskar und Maskarenen östlich bis Indonesien, nördlich bis Südjapan, südlich bis Vanuatu.
