Etymologie
Verrucosus (= warzig, mit Warzen bedeckt), was sich vermutlich auf "stumpfe, kegelförmige Erhebungen" in der Mitte der Schuppen bezieht, die ihren Körper "rau anfühlen" lassen. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Nordatlantik und zirkumglobal in der südlichen Hemisphäre.

Status: Stand 4.1.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Einige der lebensgeschichtlichen Merkmale von Allocyttus verrucosus machen diese Art besonders anfällig für Überfischung. Die Produktivität der Oreo-Subpopulationen dürfte sehr langsam sein, und wenn es zu einer Überfischung kommt, wird dies langfristig zu einem Zusammenbruch des Bestands führen. Es ist bekannt, dass der Oreo über 100 Jahre alt werden kann und eine extrem langsam wachsende Art ist (Lyle & Smith 1997). Die Fischerei über Seebergen ist bei den derzeitigen Mengen und mit den derzeitigen Methoden möglicherweise nicht nachhaltig.
