Etymologie

Aga- (= viel oder sehr); myxa (= Schleim), Anspielung nicht erklärt; laut [[Mark H. Sabaj Pérez|]] ähnelt Agamyxis sehr und kommt manchmal zusammen mit Acanthodoras vor, die, wenn sie gestört werden, einen weißen milchigen Schleim aus der Achselregion ihrer Bruststacheln ausscheiden; vielleicht teilte John Hauxwell, der den Holotypus von Agamyxis pectinifrons (die Typusart von Agamyxis) sammelte, eine solche Beobachtung mit Cope.
