Etymologie
Lateinisch für Stör, abgeleitet vom griechischen akkipesios und vielleicht äquivalent zum ägyptischen xipen-pennu (Thompson 1947); Kirsch & Fordice (1899) meinen, dass es eine Kombination aus dem griechischen akis (= Spitze) und pente (= fünf) ist, was sich vermutlich auf fünf Reihen scharfer Schilder am Körper bezieht; Guasparri (2000) übersetzt den Namen aus dem Lateinischen acus (= Nadel) und pensum (= Gewicht) (eine Menge Wolle, die den Mägden täglich zum Weben oder Spinnen gegeben wird), d.h. ein Fisch, der „ein Gewicht von Nadeln besitzt“, bezogen auf die „nadelförmige Barteln“, die von seinem Maul herabhängen.
