Etymologie

Acanthus (= Dorn oder Stachel), Anspielung nicht erklärt, bezieht sich vielleicht auf die starken Rückenflossenstacheln und/oder den vergrößerten zweiten Afterflossenstachel von Acanthopagrus vagus; pagrus, von phagros, altgriechischer Name für die Schweinswale, der mindestens auf Aristoteles zurückgeht.
