Etymologie
Aus den griechischen xenos, seltsam, oura, Schwanz, und Lebias, kleiner Fisch, ein Name, der üblicherweise zur Bildung von Gattungsnamen von cyprinodontiformen Fischen verwendet wird unter Bezugnahme auf die einzigartige Morphologie der Schwanzflosse.
