Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von John Thomas "Pat" Patterson (1878-1960), Embryologe und Genetiker an der Universität von Texas, der Eigenmann das Typusexemplar schickte.

Gefahren für diese Art: Diese Art ist potenziell durch das Überpumpen des Grundwasserleiters bedroht, der die Hauptquelle für die Wasserversorgung der Menschen in der Region darstellt. In den 1990er Jahren wurde in der Nähe des bekannten Lebensraums der Art der (damals) weltweit größte Wasserbrunnen gebohrt, und das Wasser wurde kurzzeitig für eine Welsfarm genutzt; anschließend wurden der Brunnen und die Wasserrechte vom San Antonio Water System erworben, das den Brunnen nun für die Überwachung des Aquifers nutzt. Die Erschöpfung des Grundwasserspeichers stellt eine Bedrohung für den Zahnlosen Blindwels dar, da das anaerobe Wasser der "Schlechtwasser"-Zone möglicherweise die gute Wasserqualität ersetzt, in der sich der Fisch jetzt aufhält.
Die Verschmutzung durch industrielle und landwirtschaftliche Quellen stellt eine potenzielle Bedrohung dar, aber der Schutz des Grundwasserleiters für die menschliche Nutzung wird wahrscheinlich auch den Blindwels schützen.
