Etymologie
Etymologie nicht erklärt, vielleicht von stemonos (= Faden), bezogen auf "aalähnlichen, sehr länglichen und dünnen" Körper von Stemonosudis intermedius; sudis (= Hecht oder Speer), alter Name für den Barrakuda (Carangaria: Sphyraenidae) und gemeinsames Suffix für die Familie, in Anlehnung an die oberflächliche Ähnlichkeit zwischen den beiden Familien.
