Typen
Holotypus: AMS I.16255-001 [ex MAMU F24].
Typusfundort: Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia [Tasmanische See, südwestlicher Pazifik].
Etymologie
Von mega- (= groß); ops (= Auge), bezogen auf "große Länge" der "Orbitalhöhle". (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Östlicher Indischer Ozean: früher als australischer Endemit betrachtet. Ostatlantik: bestätigt im Mittelmeer. Dornhaie, die derzeit in der aktuellen Literatur als Squalus megalops bezeichnet werden, scheinen zu einem Komplex ähnlicher Arten zu gehören. Exemplare aus den verschiedenen Regionen müssen noch sorgfältig verglichen werden.
