Benannt nach Professor Margaret Mary Smith, erster Direktor des ehemaligen J.L.B. Smith-Institut (derzeit SAIAB), für ihre bemerkenswerten Beiträge zur Ichthyologie und ihren Aktivismus für Frauen in der Wissenschaft.
Verbreitung
Squalus margaretsmithae kommt im östlichen Atlantischen Ozean von Portugal und Marokko bis Südafrika vor. Sie wird am häufigsten zwischen den Küsten von Namibia und dem Western Cape, Südafrika gesammelt. Einige Vorkommen wurden von Cape Agulhas bis zur Algoa Bay, Südafrika registriert.
