Etymologie
Terra (= lat. für Erde oder Land); novus (= lat. für neu), d.h. Neufundland, Kanada, wo Richardson fälschlicherweise annahm, dass dieser Hai vorkam. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Westlicher Atlantik: Neuschottland (Kanada) südlich bis Florida (USA), einschließlich Golf von Mexiko und nordwestliches Karibisches Meer.

Status: Stand 12.04.2023:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Rhizoprionodon terraenovae wird mit Langleinen, Kiemennetzen, Schleppnetzen und in der Freizeit mit Haken und Leinen gefangen. In den Vereinigten Staaten beliefen sich die geschätzten kommerziellen Anlandungen im Jahr 2016 auf 302.516 Pfund Gewicht, während die Fänge im Freizeitbereich 76.396 Individuen betrugen (NMFS 2017). Die Anzahl der als Beifang in kommerziellen Garnelenschleppnetzen gefangenen Tiere wurde auf 1.025 geschätzt. In Mexiko wird sie im Golf von Mexiko (von Tamaulipas bis Yucatan) und in der Karibik (Quintana Roo) gefangen, wo sie bis zu 45,9 % der jährlichen Fänge der handwerklichen Fischerei ausmacht, die auf 40 Elasmobranch-Arten abzielt.
