Benannt nach der Typuslokalität, dem Tym River.

Gefahren für diese Art: Die Bestände von Pungitius tymensis nehmen aufgrund der Verfüllung von Feuchtgebieten und der Auswirkungen invasiver Arten, darunter Oncorhynchus mykiss, ab. Die fehlende Konnektivität zwischen Gebirgsbächen in Japan verschärft diese Bedrohungen weiter.
