Etymologie
Der spezifische Name polysticta ist eine Verbindung aus den zwei griechischen Wörtern "polys" (= viele) und stiktos (= fleckig), das bezeiht sich auf die vielen schwarzen Flecken auf dem Rücken- und den Seiten.
Verbreitung
Pseudogobio polysticta ist im östlichen Honshu, Japan, verbreitet. Es sind Exemplare aus dem Fuji-River-System in den Präfekturen Yamanashi und Shizuoka, aus dem Kitakami-River-System in der Präfektur Iwate am Pazifik (aber nicht von der Izu-Halbinsel) und der Hamadori-Region in der Präfektur Fukushima für das Natsui-River-System bestätigt und vom Seki-River-System in der Präfektur Niigata bis zum Iwaki-River-System in der Präfektur Aomori auf der japanischen Seeseite. Es ist jedoch nicht bekannt, ob sich die natürliche Verbreitung nördlich der Präfektur Akita erstreckt. Die Population im Fuji-Flusssystem, das den westlichen Rand der pazifischen Nebenverbreitung von P. polysticta umfasst und den östlichen Rand der Verbreitung von Pseudogobio esocinus ausmacht, ist vermutlich ein Naturhybride von P. polysticta und P. esocinus.
