Typusfundort: Rio Tocantins in der Nähe der Mündung des rechten Nebenflusses des Rio Manoel Alves, Bundesstaat Tocantins, Brasilien, 11°18'55"S, 48°27'28"W (Karte).
Etymologie
Rex (= lateinisch für "König"), in Anlehnung an seine große, massige Größe und sein auffälliges Farbmuster, "König der Potamotrygon-Arten im Rio Tocantins".
