Etymologie
Von potamos (= Fluss), bezogen auf den fluviatilen Lebensraum; trygon, griechisch für Stechrochen, möglicherweise abgeleitet von tri- (= drei) und gonio- (= Winkel), bezogen auf dreieckige Form von einigen Stachelrochen, die durch Kopf- und Brustflossen gebildet wird.
