Etymologie
Curtus (= kurz), bezogen auf einen kürzeren Schwanz im Vergleich zu drei anderen damals bekannten japanischen Schmerlen: Cobitis rubripinnis und Cobitis maculata (beide heute Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) und Cobitis taenia japonica (= Cobitis biwae). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Japan: Biwa-See, Yodo-Fluss und mehrere Flüsse der Präfektur Okayama.
