Etymologie
Von papilio (= Schmetterling), bezieht sich auf einen hohen Körper, abgerundete Flossen und die Farben von Männchen, die einem Schmetterling ähneln; lebias, griechischer Name für eine Art kleiner Fische, wurde zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet und ist heute ein gebräuchliches Namensanhängsel in der Ordnung (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project).
