Etymologie
Mega, groß, bezogen auf die Größe seiner Gattungsmitglieder, die unter den größten in der Familie sind; lebias, griechischer Name für eine Art kleinen Fisch, wurde der zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet und ist jetzt eine gebräuchliche Wurzelnamenbildung in der Ordnung (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project).
