Etymologie
Mega- (= groß), bezogen auf die Größe seiner Gattungsmitglieder, die unter den größten in der Familie sind; lebias (= griechischer Name für eine Art kleinen Fisch), wurde der zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet und ist jetzt eine gebräuchliche Wurzelnamenbildung in der Ordnung.
