Etymologie
Von lepido (= Schuppen), bezogen auf Schuppen, die den bauchseitigen Schwanzflossenlappen bedecken; Charax, eine typische Gattung der Characiformes, stammt aus dem Griechischen und bedeutet "Palisade aus spitzen Stöcken" und bezieht sich auf dicht gedrängte scharfe Zähne, nun ein häufiger Stamm-Namen in der Ordnung.
