Etymologie
Als Ersatzname für Cryptolebias Costa 2004 (vorbelegt durch eine Gattung fossiler cyprinodontoider Fische aus Europa): kryptos (= versteckt), bezogen auf die Tatsache, dass alle Arten „ihre generische Identität seit mehr als 100 Jahren nicht mehr korrekt bewertet hatten und unter den zahlreichen Arten der vielfältigen und weit verbreitete Gattung Rivulus versteckt waren“; lebias (= griechischer Name für eine Art kleiner Fische), wurde zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet und ist heute eine gebräuchliche Wurzelnamenbildung in der Ordnung.
