Typusfundort: Arid Island, vor der nordöstlichen Küste von Great Barrier Island, Distrikt Auckland, Neuseeland.
Etymologie
Octo- (= acht); fasciatus (= gebändert), bezieht sich auf acht breite, dunkelviolette Streifen auf dem Körper (die Streifen können beim Tod sofort verblassen). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Indo-Westpazifik: Ostkap und KwaZulu-Natal (Südafrika), Ostafrika, Golf von Aden, Persischer Golf, Sokotra (Jemen), Madagaskar und westliche Maskarenen (La Réunion, Mauritius) östlich bis zu den Marquesas-Inseln (Französisch-Polynesien), nördlich bis Japan, südlich bis Rottnest Island (Westaustralien), Neukaledonien, nördliches Neuseeland, Kermadec-Inseln und Tonga.
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 18.11.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Die Populationen dieser Art könnten dort zurückgehen, wo sie von der Fischerei beansprucht wird, vor allem, da die Technik es kommerziellen und Freizeitfischern ermöglicht, bis zu 500 Meter tief zu fischen, doch wird dies derzeit auf globaler Ebene nicht als große Bedrohung angesehen.
