Etymologie
Gymnos (= nackt), bezieht sich auf das Fehlen von Schuppen am ventralen Körperteil; lebias (= griechischer Name für eine Art kleinen Fisch), wurde zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet und ist jetzt eine gebräuchliche Wurzelnamenbildung in der Ordnung.
