Typusfundort: Cavery River und seine Zuflüsse, südliches Indien.
Etymologie
Wahrscheinlich sollte der Artname ausdrücken, dass diese Art ähnlich zu Gobio angra (Hamilton, 1822) ist, darauf verweist Jerdon. Aber der Buchstabe "n" wird in seiner Arbeit sowohl beim Namen angra" durch ein "u" vertauscht, als auch beim Namen angroides, wodurch die Art als augroides beschrieben wurde.
