Etymologie
Kombination von Gobius, bezogen auf das, was Lacepéde als seine "vielen Verbindungen" (Übersetzung, d. h. enge Verwandtschaft) mit Grundeln und Esox, Hecht (Esociformes), bezeichnet, bezogen auf die hechtartige hintere Platzierung der Rückenflosse in der Nähe des Schwanzes.
