Etymologie
Lateinisierung von Ghiyuri, einem seiner lokalen gangetischen Namen in Indien (gemäß Hamiltons Notizen, wie sie 1934 von Hora veröffentlicht wurden).
Verbreitung
Südliches Rotes Meer; Indo-Westpazifik: Ostafrika, Südafrika, Sokotra, Seychellen, Madagaskar und westliche Maskarenen östlich bis zu den Gesellschaftsinseln, nördlich bis zu den Philippinen, südlich bis Pilbara (Westaustralien), New South Wales (Australien) und Neukaledonien.

Status: Stand 26.05.2021:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Es sind keine größeren Bedrohungen für diese Art bekannt. Mögliche Bedrohungen sind Aktivitäten, die die Flusssysteme, in denen sie vorkommt, beschädigen oder verändern können, z. B. die Schaffung von Dämmen, die die Besiedelung durch Nachkommen beeinträchtigen können. Abholzung, Deponierung und biochemische Kontamination sind die Hauptbedrohungen in Sri Lanka. Die Verwendung als Speisefisch kann eine lokale Bedrohung sein. Obwohl diese Art sowohl für die Fischereiindustrie als auch für den Aquarienhandel kommerziell gesammelt wird, ist keine dieser Tätigkeiten derzeit eine große Bedrohung.
