Etymologie
Der Name Pongondó ist die lokale Bezeichnung für die Einwohner des Dorfes Povo Novo, Gemeinde Rio Grande, wo die Art endemisch ist.
Verbreitung
Austrolebias pongondo ist nur aus temporären Pools und Sümpfen in den Auen südlich des São Gonçalo-Kanals, Povo Novo, Rio Grande, Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul, Südbrasilien, bekannt. Die verschiedenen Pools und Sümpfe dieses Gebiets wurden nach der Duplizierung der Straße BR-392 zwischen 2011 und 2012 erheblich reduziert. Demzufolge beziehen sich mindestens die Exemplare CIMC 4595, CIMC 5671, CIMC 42098, CIMC 42099, CIMC 42100, CIMC 42103, CIMC 42108 und CIMC 42114 auf Pools, die heute verschwunden sind. In Anbetracht des kleinen Verbreitungsgebietes und des intensiven Niedergangs der restlichen Populationen sollte A. pongondo als zu den vom Aussterben bedrohten Arten im südlichen Brasilien aufgeführt werden.
