Typusfundort: Brasilien, Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul, Vacaria, temporärer Tümpel in der Nähe vom rio Socorro,
rio Apuaê-Inhandava-Einzugsgebiet, oberes Río Uruguay-Becken, 28°22'43.6"S, 50°52'21.8"W (Karte).
Etymologie
Das spezifische Epitheton botocudo bezieht sich auf ein indigenes Volk, welches früher diese Region bewohnte und zur ethnischen Gruppe der Xokleng Laklãnõ gehörte. Diese waren im 19. Jahrhundert als "Botocudos" bekannt, weil erwachsene Männer einen Botoque (eine steckerartige Holzscheibe) verwendeten, um die Unterlippe zu vergrößern. Eine Anspielung auf ein Merkmal dieser Art, bei der der Unterkiefer prominenter erscheint, als bei anderen Arten der Untergattung Acrolebias.
Verbreitung
Die Art wurde nur in zwei temporären Tümpeln in einer Hochlandwiesenlandschaft am rio Socorro, einem Nebenfluss des oberen rio Apuaê-Inhandava (oberes Río Uruguay-Becken), nachgewiesen, in Höhen zwischen 926 und 934 m ü.M., Gemeinde Vacaria, Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul, Südbrasilien.
