Typusfundort: Süßwasser-Bach auf der Hardy-Halbinsel, Feuerland und Río Santa Cruz, Patagonien.
Etymologie
Maculatus (= gefleckt), bezieht sich auf "zahlreiche auffällige Flecken und kleine unregelmäßige schwarze Querstreifen" auf dem Körper. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Ozeanien: Australien (einschließlich Tasmanien), Lord Howe Island, Neuseeland und die Chatham-Inseln. Südamerika: Von der chilenischen Seite der Anden bei Valparaiso bis zum südlichen Ende der Inselkette südöstlich von Feuerland. Auch auf der Ostseite der Anden in Argentinien in einzelnen Seen (Meliquina, Traful, Nahuel Huapi, Gutierrez und Pellegrini), die über den Rio Negro in den Atlantik entwässern. Sie kommt auch auf den Falklandinseln vor.
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 4.10.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: In Neuseeland hat der Verlust von Aufzucht- und Laichhabitaten durch Landrodung, den Verlust von Flussverbindungen durch Gezeiten- und Hochwassertore sowie Sperrwerke, Kanalisierung, Wehre, Dämme und Entwässerung von Land und Feuchtgebieten die Verbreitung dieser Art erheblich eingeschränkt. Der Verlust der Ufervegetation (z. B. durch Zertrampeln, Beweidung und Mahd) stellt ebenfalls eine Bedrohung für die Laichplätze dar. Vor der Einführung von Fischereiregelungen trug auch die Fischerei auf Weißfisch in Neuseeland zu einem starken Rückgang dieser Art bei. Die Prädation durch eingeführte Salmoniden ist eine weitere potenzielle Bedrohung für diese Art in Neuseeland. Die gleichen Bedrohungen bestehen wahrscheinlich auch in Australien, doch wurde dort kein Rückgang beobachtet.
Informationen über Bedrohungen im übrigen Verbreitungsgebiet dieser Art sind nicht bekannt, sie ist jedoch nach wie vor zahlreich und weit verbreitet.
