Etymologie
Fibra (= Faden oder Filament), bezogen auf den verlängerten zweiten Rückenflossenstachel von Fibramia thermalis und die schmale, blasse oder dunkle Mittellinie auf den Körpern von Fibramia amboinensis und Fibramia lateralis; Amia, ein nicht-binominaler Name, der von Gronow (1763) auf Apogon angewendet wurde, heute ein häufig verwendetes Namensanhängsel in der Familie.
